Discussion Title: Baby borrowers
Created by: gail Created on: Tue, 06/17/2008 - 12:35pm. I know, I said I wouldn't be back, and I'm not, but I wanted to reach everybody I could about this issue. I sent this e-mail to everybody on my address list, and then I thought of all of you.
I read yesterday in the paper about a TV show that is going to begin airing on June 25 on NBC. I was really upset about the show and I wanted to invite you to join me if you happen to agree with me.
I'm sending this to everyone on my address list, so if you don't remember who I am, Sorry!
Just wanted you to know, as quickly as possible, that I will regretfully end my 45 year long relationship with what has been a fine network if you air a single episode of baby borrowers. That you have condoned removing children for 72 hours from their primary caregivers is abominable. Your purported admirable motive blinded you to participating in human slavery and abuse.

I'm looking for an answer to these questions. First, how many waking hours a day did the parents spend with their children? Second, in the preparation for the separation, was the possibility of attachment disruption discussed with the parents? Were any specific policies in place to prevent attachment disruption? Third, does anybody really believe that leaving your child with strangers in a strange place, and popping in when things get bad is a good idea? Fourth, has any consideration been given to the possibility that airing the video of this experience on national TV will aggravate the impact on those children, make it a continued reality in their lives long after the initial experience is over?

NBC still closes my browser when I try to communicate directly with them. If someone could copy that first paragraph and post it on the NBC message board, I would take it as a great personal favor. I've also been trying to comment on other news forums like newspapers that did press releases about the show. I have been prevented from commenting! Yeah, in the US. Those entities are privately held. It is legal, they don't have to post what I say. Somebody give it a try and see if it is just that they recognize my e-mail, or if commentary is being censored because NBC really doesn't want this discussion to take place. I haven't tried ABC/CBS or cable networks. The most important thing is to contact your local NBC affiliate and their parent corporation and advertisers.

Gail, it seems like you're over reacting just a tad. The length of time the babies are left with the teenagers is 3 days. I don't think this is long enough for attachment disruptions. I haven't read a study on it, but Gail if you would like to throw out some facts I'd love to hear them. Also the parents probably see the babies on a daily basis. Its exactly the same this as getting a baby sitter.

I've asked sballvr for that info, as she is a child pshychologist (sic). I am a mom. I don't have a college degree.
Any parents who use daycare or babysitters want to comment on the notion that 3 days in a strange setting with strangers is the same as part of a day?

I have been following this thread. I think that teen pregnancy is out of control in this country. I have been researching this show too. I think its not nearly as bad as people think. The parents aparently visit the kids at least once a day. So I don't see how this is any different than babysitting. Even better because the parents can monitor constantly. I will be watching this show and hope my teenage sister does as well.

So, any nurse who works on a pediatric ward, could you please address that about the parents visit the kids at least once a day? Wouldn't you like some data on one question, "How many waking hours per day do the children and parents spend together?"
I don't want the show to air if we don't have that question answered.
Got a 4 hour training tonight. If you can watch NBC this evening, and call advertisers, please do. What I do is during commercial breaks, I write down all the advertisers, then during the show I run around the house and find products advertised, and call their customer service numbers. This is quicker for me than finding the numbers on the internet. Just tell the person who answers the phone that you are part of a boycott of NBC, and you want to talk to their PR people about your concerns. Most of them, (except Kimberley Clark, but I didn't have any huggies at home so if you do try that number) will send you to somebody's voice mail. Leave a brief message, and your name and number if you feel comfortable doing so. Names and numbers make your input verifiable, and that makes it more valuable. I've really got to go!!
Those of you who have been helping, thank you so much!

Gail, its strange that you are boycotting the show when you don't even know the facts about separation disorder. Why are you boycotting the show?

Yeah, she is boycotting the show by telling people to watch the show so they can write down the advertisers. Sounds like she is actually trying to get people to watch NBC! Hmmmm....

Gail knows about attachment disorders from personal experience, as do I. I also know about them from my university studies. She wants people to watch NBC BEFORE the show airs, to see which advertisers should be made aware of this issue.

I don't know who to address this to, and it may not even be anyone who has ever seen this board, - _ - _ - _
GREAT WORK SOMEBODY
an NBC affiliate somewhere is showing "The sweetest thing." A movie. From 8 to 10 p.m. tomorrow. If that happened at your affiliate, could you please call national companies who advertise on NBC for one hour tomorrow even though you have already succeeded in your market, to help those of us in other markets. And watch whatever you want from 8 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Put your feet up. Have some popcorn. (do I sound giddy?) There is no way to know whether the question of the effect on the children touched the affiliate manager, or the economic factors did. Call your affiliate. Call advertisers.
