Parents Reflection

Hello, I my name is Krystal and I am currently working on my Early Childhood Education degree. When I'm done I want to teach pre-k. I am enrolled in a class called Students with Special Needs. We have discussion questions each week on different topics and this week we are toask a parent to refect on different issues. One question is how does your child's disability effect your family? In other words does each member have a different role/job they are in charge of or does everybody pitch in. Also, do you feel the teachers collaborate well with you and your family? Do they keep you informed and up to date? I would greatly appreciate your feedback and I am interested in what everyone has to say. Thanks Krystal

Well Krystal you caught me on a good day!

How does your child's disability affect your family? Does
each member have a different role/job they are in charge of or does everybody
pitch in? Basically, everyone pitches in on the normal day to day stuff, except
when it comes to medical issues and school issues. Those are big issues
requiring much research, reading, studying, and planning. I believe I know more
about the medical system and the school system than any doctor or teacher. I
didn’t plan for this to be like this. However, at this point, I recently told
my husband if something happens to me he is to remember 3 words, Disability Law
Center. They are the only people that could handle the medical or educational
issues.

Also, do you feel the teachers collaborate well with you and
your family? Do they keep you informed and up to date? You know I used to
answer these questions hoping things will get better. I have given up. I truly
believe the teachers mean well! It’s just after working with regular ed
teachers and special ed teachers in gifted, regular, and special ed programs, I
no longer expect this of them, and now I shoulder it as one of my responsibilities.

In all fairness, I do have to admit my son had a special ed
teacher who really collaborated well with me, my son and our family. We were
very well informed and up to date. I miss her! However, she finished the
classes she was attending at college and she moved on.

Good Luck on teaching little ones!!
