HELP- effects of child’s disability on the family

Hi, my name is Natalie. I am a college student getting my BA in special education and elementary education. I have a class assignment that requires me to find a message board and ask parents of children with special needs about:

1.the effects of child's disability on the family...

2. collaboration between family and teachers...

3. siblings of children with disabilities...

If anyone could please help me. Tell me about any of the 3 above and how it affects your family. Thank you in advance for your time, it is greatly appreciated.
Natalie

My child was born deaf and this is how it affected us:

1.the effects of child's disability on the family...
I ended up with post partum depression, cried all the time, wasn't a happy person. My husband also suffered some depression. We had a 3 yr old at the time and I was short tempered with him b/c of my feelings.
Now that we are past all of that we are all rather happy. We now know that him being born deaf isn't bad like we thought it was, just different. I do admit that I and my husband were very lenient with him the first 15 mths of his life, he could have gotten away with murder! And my oldest son noticed that and did have some jealousy. We have since changed that and treat all of them the same.

2. collaboration between family and teachers...
We aren't in the school setting yet but we do have 2 speech therapists-one private and one with early intervention and an occupational therapist as well as a teacher of the deaf. All of us go over plans together and they give me ideas to work with him at home since he is with me the bulk of the time. Communication is key so that we are all on the same page.

3. siblings of children with disabilities...
We have 2 other children and I feel that they have done very well with our sons "disability". My oldest is almost 5 and he now thinks that he was born deaf too and then had surgery to get cochlear implants and learned to hear and talk :) Both of our other children want to wear their brother's ear gear. We messed up in the beginning by letting our son have anything he wanted b/c we had guilt about the deafness and our oldest did have some jealousy about that but we corrected that a long time ago and now they are best buds.
