Torn....should I or shouldn't I hold my 4th grader back?
My son is 9 years old and in 4th grade. Born in 08/01, he is a young 4th grader. He has struggled constantly since starting school. He has been tested and has an IEP team that work with him regularly at school. He requires assistance on almost all his schoolwork. He still cannot grasp basic concepts (ie: multiplication, etc), still struggles with reading and is becoming more and more frustrated and defeated.
He told me the other day that he wants to be held back because he "just doesn't get it". My heart broke that he was so sad and appeared worn out by the whole thing.
I am struggling with the decision to hold him back or not. I certainly don't want him pushed through only to struggle more in 5th grade and above. I just want to do what is best for my child. If only they came with instruction booklets or a crystal ball :)
