My son is 7 years old and will be 8 in Nov.  His  Teacher wants by son to repeat the first grade again .  He is being tutor twice a week and I've been working with him on reading skills.  He is making great progress, but according to the teacher he should have master it by now.  All the topics are about kids that are younger, but he will be 8 years old in the 1st grade.  No learing disability found by school. I think its a matter of being interested in school.

I would like to know if anyone out there has had a child with a older birthdate, with no LD problems, struggling in school, making real porgress, But still reading below level to be a strong 2nd grader starting in Aug 08.
I plan on having him tutor one on one and work with tutor during the summer. His teacher is still recommending holding him back anyway. I want to do what is best for my son, but my gutt feeling is telling me to work this summer with him ? Open for suggestion if you have any advice to share!

It is very unusual for a teacher to recommend holding a child back. My neighbor (who currently teaches 6th grade) has always delayed starting her sons in school, because her experience is that boys mature differently than girls and have greater success if they start school later.
