Discussion Title: Regarding teen privacy.
Created by: theredpony Created on: Wed, 07/11/2007 - 11:11am. How much privacy should be allowed to teens, and why? i am a teen myself, and i think my mom is going too far. checking my phone for messages almost everyday, and if i fall asleep and leave the com on, she'll immediately hop into my friendster account and check who my friends are, check my msn, check my mail, check EVERYTHING. i mean, okay... maybe i should tell her, but she's my mom, it's awkward if i start! and really... sneaking? to check on me? why can't she be a proper mother and get involved in my life?... she never asks me how life is, or how school is, the only thing she asks me everyday is ''what marks did you get for this week's commontest?'' that's all. not how i found the paper, not whether i thought i would do well, the marks. that was all that was important to her. markssss. and, whenever she finds me talking to a boy (i go to an all girls school) online or on the phone, she'll start interrogating me about the ''who what when where why how''s about this person. she'll demand for his number, address, parent's numbers, emails... etcetc, and then force me to stop talking to the person immediately. isn't it too much? really. and if i refuse, she'll confiscate my phone, ban me from com, blahblah. isn't it unfair? and won't this just make me want to rebel even more?(i'm trying to control it now, i'm fourteen, i think it's time for my mom to stop breathing down my neck {on the sly okay!}, and just let go. why can't she put some trust in me? i'm sensible enough, there's no peer pressure in my school to get boyfriends or get involved with anything bad/illegal, and please, i have been instilled with morals and values already. i know what i can or cannot do, why can't i talk to boys then? i don't see any problem, if we're talking about regular stuff eg school(which is always the case) or make new friends on the net? i accept only those whom i deem as acceptable, like maybe from the school next door, or if i know/have seen them before. why must i tell... no wait, why must my mom SNEAK to find out everything about me, when she doesn't talk to me like a regular mom(with exception for the marks and interrogation) and seems like she doesn't care. at least be involved in my life, BE A MOM. how should i approach this problem?

If you find it to hard to talk write your mother a letter and give it to her before you go to school or off with your friends. Let her know how you feel respectfully. Most of the time when parents seem to be over protective they are afraid of what you might do or what might happen to you. I quite sure your mom loves you and I know its hard when a parent seems only to care about your grades but I'm sure she only wants whats best for you. She is concerned about your future. All parents want their kids to do well in school sometimes we push instead of supporting and encouraging. Be honest, and be trust worthy. Rebeling May anger and hurt your mom but in the end you will hurt yourself the most forgiving others is alot easier then forgiving ourselves.

I'm with Brindy on this one. Your message here was extremely convincing and would make a great foundation for a letter to you mom. Let her know that you will be open with her about your actions, and in return, you would like her to take more interest in you as a person.
