Diabetes in kids

Diabetes runs in my family. I have it, and I'm really afraid my 8-yr old daughter will get it, too. I don't want my daughter to have to face this illness - especially when she's young. She is a little overweight. What can I do to keep her as healthy as possible without obsessing over her weight and making her feel bad about herself?

Diabetes runs in my family as well. I have type 2 when I was about 22 yrs. old. I am 26 now and still struggle with losing weight. See if she is interested in any sports. Even in-line skating or just taking walks around the neighborhood will help. Do it with her though. Make a habit of doing it 2 times a week. Then add on more days later.

I think if you watch the starches will help. I would ask your doctor about what you could encourage her to eat so that she doesn't have to get diabetes. It runs in my family too. So far I don't have it, but I know my dad didn't get until he was in his 60's or 70's.
