Pacifier Weaning

We took our 2 1/2 year old daughter's pacifier away over 2 weeks ago.  The first few nights were hard but we got through it.  She is no longer asking for it, but she CAN NOT sleep without it.  Bedtime is 8pm and last night she laid in her bed until after 11:30, no crying just could not soothe herself to sleep.  Then she is up at 5am and can't fall back asleep, with a 2 hour hap daily she is getting less than 8 hours of sleep and is a zombie, yet, she cannot soothe herself to sleep.

I am at the point of giving it back to her only in her bed, because the lack of sleep far outweighs the pacifier.

Talk to you child's dr. It may just take time for your daughter to get used to being w/out a pacifier. I wldn't go back to it at this time. Maybe try substituting the pacifier for a stuffed animal or blanky. Mostly, though, it's just going to take time. Your daughter may have some sleepless nights for a while, but I'm sure she'll get used to the fact that the pacifer is gone. Eventually she's got to sleep, right? Be patient. Things will get better soon.

My daughter who sucked her thumb until she was 6 has beautiful straight teeth. My mother who sucked her finger til she was 14 has beautiful straight teeth. I say, If she was a thumb-sucker, she would suck her thumb at night, and maybe it would mess up her bite, and maybe it wouldn't, but a pacifier will not mess up her bite. Just let her have it at night. When she is ready, she will stop using it.

I have to agree that you should let her keep the pacifier for now if it is just for bedtime use. She will eventually give it up herself. I have three boys and a girl, all now grown up. My sons all had pacifiers and all gave them up by the time they were three without any coercion from me. My daughter on the other hand sucked her thumb, and I am told by her partner that she still does often in her sleep. By the way, all my children have lovely straight teeth too so I don't think you have to worry about that angle either.

my son will be two and he was so addicted to his binky that he would throw a fit if we even walked outside without it. I finally found a method that took only seven days to work. First I gathered all of his binkys and poked several holes in the end of them. i then put them in plain sight for him to have. I waited until the third day and again picked them up and cut the tip off of them and put them back. The next day again cut the tip more.On the fifth day I cut it across the bottom. eventually he began to come to me offering me broken binkys and I told him if he wanted he could throw them away. he finally threw them all away and told me that they were all broken. He was sleeping without asking for it by the fifth night and is still doing good.
