Discussion Title: DAYCARE
Created by: serrato8 Created on: Thu, 03/19/2009 - 5:42pm. Hi Everyone! I'm writing because my son is starting childcare on Monday. During the first visit, he didn't want to leave. I don't want to take him kicking and screaming, but I'm not sure what else to do. I tried distracting him with something outside of the room, and I tried encouraging him with going to see his bigger brother, but no luck there. Any advice on how to get him to leave?

Maybe you could just teach him how to behave when it is time to leave. How old is he?

It's worse if you stick around. Drop your son off, even if he throws a tantrum. He'll get over it. I'm sure the staff is used to this kind of behavior, and I bet your son's not the only one acting this way. Once he gets used to the routine, things shld get better. You can try rewarding your son when he has a good day by going out for ice cream, spending time at the park or letting him pick out a toy at the dollar store. Things shld get better soon. Hang in there.

He's 2 1/2 years old.

He actually loves it there. The probelm is getting him to leave. Today was better though. Even though he resisted leaving, I empathized and assured that we'd be back soon and everyone waved. I think I was just nervous about not wanting the separation to be a negative experience, but it turned out okay. Thanks for the advice! :)

I'm glad to hear that your son likes his daycare. That is a sign that you found the right provider.
You and your provider need to present a united front. Have him say goodbye, get his things, ask your provider to tell him that it is time to go, but he can come back tomorrow, then very matter-of-factly walk him out the door. Carry him if you have to. Don't make a big deal out of it, don't punish him for getting mad, just tell him it is time to go.
He will only kick and scream a few times before he realizes it doesn't work.
One other thought is to have the daycare provider walk him out to the car with you.
