8mos not responding to name yet

my 8 month old is not responding when her name is called. i could say her name 400 times over and she won't look up at me. (she will look at me straight away if i make an unusual noise like whistling). she also doesn't look at the right person when you ask "where's mommy", "where's daddy" and doesn't seem to understand any other common words yet either (like "up", "book", "bottle" etc).

are there other people whose babies also started understanding words late and are now developing on track, or should i be worried?

I would take her to the pediatrician just as soon as you can get in.  Early intervention can make a huge difference, whatever the problem is, and there is a problem.  Be persistent with the pediatrician.  They deal with a lot of over-anxious parents, and it can be hard to get them to understand that you are seeing a real problem.

I agree with the last person, it's never too early to get some kind of intervention.  By now an 8mon old should be able to know at least a few simples words. My son was a late talker and we went to speech therapy because he wasn't talking at 2 yrs old.  We went to speech for almost a year and now he's ahead of 95% of kids his age and ready to skip a grade. It couldn't hurt to ask the baby's doctor for a lil more help!

Hi there.  I wouldn't necessarily compare your child to other children because every child is so different, but you need to trust your gut feeling.  You know your child best and if you think there may be something delayed or something not right, then you should definitely talk to your pediatrician.  I am sure everything will work out....good luck!!!

AND YOU HAVE NOT HAD THIS CHILD'S  HEARING CHECKED YET????????????

what is wrong with you? this child could have a frequency loss that includes human voice frequency but allows her to hear the frequency of other sounds such as whistling.....GET THIS KID TO AN AUDIOLOGIST! YESTERDAY!!!

I don't think you needed to be that harsh.  I am sure she is very worried and stressed enough and probably does not need people being hostile towards her.  These message boards should be supportive and an outlet for parents!

not harsh...pragmatic, realistic, and with regard to frequency loss...accurate. in life there are wake-up calls.  parents need to hear them, (no pun intended,) react and respond.

Oh to be as wise as you.

I enjoy the interplay.  Go to it, both of you.  And junie, I've found Lanie to be compassionate on at least one post, and well-informed on most posts.  And Lanie, with the junie thing, if you are enjoying the by-play, keep at it.  If not, just ignore her.

Do I sound like somebody's mother, or what!
