I want to homeschool

I want to home school my soon to be 5 year old instead of sending him to a public elementary school, problem is I am not sure what I need to do to get started. I live in Lockport NY and the education website is not too helpful. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thank You.

First have you thought about whether you would like to design your own lesson plans or have them ready made? Second, do you have any teaching experience?
Your decision to home school is an excellent one and I appluad you for the effort. Home school is an excellent choice that will bring joy to not only your son but also to you.
If you do not have alot of teaching experience or alot of time to design lesson plans then you might consider a program that will offer you everything that you need. This allows you to focus on your child and spend time with him and his needs instead of trying to decide what to teach.
If you would like more information or have other questions just let me know.

don't do it...best advice i can give as a child who was home educated...

socialization is a huge issue (despite the article i just read on this site) I am almost 30 and still have never been able to create a friendship with a peer after all these years...

Would you be willing to tell more of your story? I keep my kids enrolled in the music programs at the school and our church has a good youth program, and I'm NOT a purist--my kids spend some years in conventional school and some years in home school.

My 27 y/o daughter loved being homeschooled and is tremendously social.

It would be interesting to hear from someone for whom it was not a good fit.

Socially I'd find some local activity clubs such as swimming and gymnastics or football. There are also usually home schooling networks you can become part of in most areas. Curriculum wise there is lots of stuff online you can refer to but most of all make it fun. I have a hub on hub pages that gives a few ideas for some fun/educational activities you could try, it's how to teach vital skills to your toddler and make it fun.
