7 year old insomniac

OMG. Help? For what seems like the 80 millionth night in a row, it's 11:30 pm and my child is still awake screaming that she can't sleep. We have a consistent daytime routine and a consistent bedtime routine and have for the entirety of her life. The bedtime routine consists of getting ready for bed, reading stories for an hour and another hour of me cuddling with her and then, every night, degrades into her throwing a fit (or otherwise avoiding sleep) for several hours when I leave the room. We used to start this mess at 9. A few months ago I tried starting this at 7, hoping she'd be sleeping by 9. She finally falls asleep every night after midnight. We wake up at 7. Even as a baby, she slept a fraction of the hours others did. Wth??? Any ideas? I asked several docs, all said, "kids that age don't have sleep problems. They just need routine".

I know that some people require less sleep than normal, but I have no idea if this can be true of children. I would ask a doctor who won't brush you off about this.

While children usually need more sleep than adults, your daughter is getting 7-8 hours of sleep... I'd see if it's possible that this is enough for her and she just isn't tired.

Is she functioning well in school and with other activities? If so, what's the big deal? If it is because you want to go to sleep before 11pm or midnight, try waking her up earlier.

Also, make sure your daughter gets exercise and it might also help to cut out or drastically reduce sugars and caffeine.

A qualified pediatrician can recommend a sleep study for your daughter. Find one who will do so.
