Hey All

What is your favorite name for a girl and what is your favorite name for a boy?  What name do you like least.  What are your reasons for liking or disliking a name?

Let me hear from you!

Marti

jah'nyllah cool name

As a child, I always loved the names, Chloe, Zoe, Emma, and Maeve.  Funny, we called none of our children those.

My folks named their first two Jane and John, but then broke out of the mold and the rest of our family starts with F, S, and G.  I named our first two with J names also, and then had 4 more, all with J names.  We kind of started to run out, there at the end, but found beautiful names all the same.  I still think that people who name their kids with all the same initial are a little strange=}.

When little I liked Arielle and Renee.  When pregnant w/1st we had girl name of Melody (big music fans) and had to work on boy name, I wanted Jonah, but hub didn't so we worked on list many months, hub trying to decide if he wanted a jr or not (Thomas but hated middle name).  We decided on Zachary Christian , a real strong sounding name, confident.  We had a boy.  2nd Preg, same game, had girl name, had to work for boy (we didn't find out sex either time) name.  We ended up having complications @ 21w and I  was hospitalized.  We rediscussed names  because now I felt that meaning had to be behind the name and not just prechosen for personal reasons but because a personality had already been displayed.  We reopted a girl name of Charlotte Elise - meaning Being (or coming from) of God and Strong, which we felt if it was  a girl she would be a miracle of god and she was already strong.   Charlotte Elise was born @ 26w and lived a couple of hours, but truly lived up to her name.

I still likeJonah, I also like Gabriel, Alexander, Xavier, Hayden for boys, I still like Melody ( a little song in our lives) and Caroline.  But we will not have option to name any more children.  Side note though, have afriend whos hubby wants to name a girl november.  Also (like but already been used)  have a Matthew, Nicholas in our family, as well as (would not use but like) Alec Liam Gavin, Carmryn & Alyssa, Samantha (3 of them), Meghan, Johnathan, even a Sydney, so cute (girl).

DO NOT LIKE reinvented names with "creative" spellings - understand "way back when _ education was not avail to all - variation took on a phonics way of spelling names that are classic today" but working in a school I see how hard it will be for them in the not to far off future, with the spellings of their names now.  It may be spelled differently ( re: "unique"), but still is supposed to sound the same , therefore, just spelled incorrectly. not "unique".  But in the long run, I don't make a judgement on the person, just because I would not consider it a name I would consider..

I like strong masculine names for boys, unlike some of your other posters who like names such as Gabriel (beautiful name, just too feminine) and Julian. By all means use Gabrielle for a girl instead, I think as it is so beautiful. A man needs a strong name and I think it helps define his masculinity. I called my son Callum Grayson (first and middle names) which I think is a great name for a boy and a good strong name for a man too. I got Callum from meeting a wonderful man called Callum McCloud and thinking it was the most wonderful name I had ever heard! Then, after my son was born the plunkett nurse told me that he was the third Callum she had seen that day! I had no clue it was in vogue - very disappointed as I also like the idea of having a name that isn't just so popular it is run of the mill. I also have Irish heritage so choosing a celtic name was important to me.

For a girl we really liked Claudia, Holly, Louise, and Millie to name a few - we had loads of names for girls, but only a few for boys.

I think odd spellings for children are just asking for trouble - they end up having to spell it out all the time, and instead of looking creative to me it just looks as though the parents couldn't spell properly (maybe I'm just a snob!).

Hi Marti.

I have always thought Hanna, Layla, Isabella and Elizabeth are beautiful names for girls.

For boys, Adam, Omar, Stewart, and Kenneth are some of my favorites.

Names that rhyme with body parts are a poor choice and are sure to cause some torment for the unfortunate child forced to endure them.

Take care!

For a boy I have always loved the name Christian Alexander (both family names) I named my son Dalton... another favorite boy name for me. For a girl, Sarah (another family name)... and I do like my own name, which is Valerie.
