I like the name Sean for a baby boy but I have a niece named Shauna. Thoughts?

I really like the name Sean for a baby boy. I do have a college-aged niece named Shauna. Obviously extremely similar but here's some of my rationale. Different spelling--I like the Sean spelling vs the Shaun or Shawn. We never shorten my niece's name, it's always Shauna. She's in college, we are close and see each other often; but it's a big age difference. I'm the youngest of five, this will be grandchild #11 and our 2nd child, so lots of good names are already taken. I really have my heart set on it. Middle name would be Patrick, which is my middle name. Sean Patrick, nice little Irishmen. What do you think? Weird or ok?

I think if you have a name that you and baby's father both like, then GO FOR IT. Choosing a name for another person is a heavy responsibility, so don't worry about the fact that Sean and Shauna are close. Especially since she is college-aged. Good luck.

Thanks for your post, much appreciated! I'm actually the father. I forgot to mention too that my brother and sis in law (Shauna's parents) like the name as well and are cool with it. I suppose that should make me feel better about it too.

i think its a great name and like the spelling as well. only seen it SEAN a few times. i changed the spelling of all three of my kids name from the normal. good luck with the new edition! and wouldnt worry about the similarity to your nieces name.
